Anglachel - "There is malice in this sword. The dark heart of the smith still dwells in it. It will not love the hand it serves, neither will it abide with you long." - Melian

Gurthang - "The sword Anglachel was forged anew for him by the cunning smiths of Nargothrond, and though ever black its edges shone with pale fire" - Children of Húrin

Gurthang was the sword of Túrin Turambar. It was wrought by Eöl the Dark Elf from a meteorite.

Anglachel (Elvish: Flaming Iron) - which was the name of the sword before it was called Gurthang - was one of the two swords Eöl forged from a meteorite (Anglachel & Anguirel). He kept the other, Anguirel, for himself. But he gave Anglachel to Elu Thingol, who eventually gave it to Beleg Cúthalion.

After a series of events, Turin and his men settled in Amon Rûdh, which was the home of the petty-dwarf Mîm. Beleg found them there and aided Turin in his exploits, thus making Amon Rûdh a point of significant resistance to Morgoth's forces. Mîm held a deep hatred for Beleg as well as all the elves, so he told the Dark Lord of the secret passages to his house, and so all the men of Turin were killed and Turin captured. Beleg was very strong and skillful healer, so he survived and set off to find Turin.

Beleg followed the orcs through Anach Pass to the frightening woods of Taur-nu-Fuin. There Beleg met Gwindor of Nargothrond, who had been captured during the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. Gwindor, however, soon escaped Angband. Eventually Beleg and Gwindor both followed the tracks along which the orcs had taken Túrin.

When they found him in the camp where he was held captive, Beleg took the unconscious Túrin outside the camp, where he cut loose Túrin's bonds. However, while unbinding him, the sword slipped and cut Túrin in his foot. Túrin immediately awoke, and grabbed the closest thing next to him, Anglachel. He did not know it was Beleg who came to rescue him and slew him with Anglachel.

Túrin mourned for years. Eventually, Túrin was given the sword Anglachel by Gwindor. Túrin then travelled to Nargothrond, where the sword was reforged and Túrin renamed it Gurthang. (Elvish: Iron of Death)
