''It was a globe with a thousand facets; it shone like silver in the firelight, like water in the sun, like snow under the stars, like rain upon the Moon!'' - Thorin Oakenshield

The Arkenstone was a gorgeous gem sought by Thorin Oakenshield during his quest to reclaim his homeland. The Arkenstone was found beneath the lonely mountain and is also known as the Heart of the Mountain. From then it was the heirloom of the dwarves of Durin's Folk. It

was lost when the dragon Smaug took their homeland and slaughtered many dwarves.

Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit from the shire and during the events of The Battle of the Five Armies was a burglar for Thorin and his company to find the Arkenstone who had been lost. He eventually found it on the great piles of Gold and after escaping Smaug the Terrible.

When the Dwarves refused to share any of the treasure with King Thranduil of the Woodland Realm and Bard of Laketown, Bilbo got out of the fort of the dwarves and gave them the Arkenstone. They tried to trade it, Thorin however, refused and called for help from his cousin Dain Ironfoot, Lord of the Iron Hills. He came with a big army of well trained Dwarves and that is when they fought against the elves of mirkwood. However, this did not last long for an uncountable amount of Orcs ran out of the grey mountains and that is when the Battle of the Five Armies committed.

Thorin died in the Battle of the Five Armies after defeating his arch-enemy Azog the Defiler. He died a heroic death and will forever be a legend and a hero to the dwarves of Durin's Folk. The Arkenstone was placed upon Thorin's chest within his tomb, which lies deep under the Lonely Mountain.
